The primary focus of the Dayton District Council is to assist the homeless and impoverished. With respect and compassion, motivated by Gospel values, we empower men, women and families to build a foundation for a secure future including permanent housing.
Our work begins with the 33 Conferences throughout the Miami Valley who focus on assisting those in poverty in their local communities. Their work is critical in helping to keep families and individuals from becoming part of the homeless community. They are assisted in their work by our Thrift Store which fulfills vouchers issued by the Conferences for furniture, clothing and other household goods. We also operate a Food Pantry which distributes food to the poor.
For those who become homeless, our first point of assistance is the St. Vincent de Paul Hotel, a 220-bed overnight shelter with food and a shower. Many only need temporary assistance during a short-term crisis. But for those whose homelessness is chronic, we offer three distinct programs. St. Vincent de Paul Supportive Housing assists up to 22 families with children and 4 single women by providing transitional housing and a comprehensive case management program to help them reach their goal of permanent housing. The St. Vincent DePaul Center provides a similar program for men at their 39-unit housing and education facility. And, for those with mental illness, we work in partnership with the YWCA Dayton on the Safe Haven program.
